Although still in use for official events and receptions held by The Queen, some parts of Buckingham Palace are opened to visitors on a regular basis. The State Rooms for example, are open to visitors during August and September, and are lavishly furnished with some of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, Poussin, Canaletto and Claude; sculptures by Canova and Chantrey; exquisite examples of Sèvres porcelain and the finest of English and French furniture.

  • Changing the Guard

 

What? Changing the Guard or Guard Mounting is the process of a new guard exchanging duty with the old guard. The Guard which mounts at Buckingham Palace is called The Queen’s Guard. The handover is accompanied by a band that plays music ranging from traditional military marches to songs from films and musicals and even familiar pop songs. The ceremony lasts 45 minutes and is free to watch.

When? Guard Mounting takes place at 11.30 am however it is advisable you reach at 11am to guarantee a good view. It is held daily from May to July, and on alternate dates throughout the rest of the year. The ceremony does not take place on very wet days.
